"Farther Away" is a B-side from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen. The official studio version first accompanied the single release of "Bring Me to Life" in early pressings, and has had three re-releases since; Its second release was as an exclusive bonus track on the Japanese edition of Fallen, its third release was as a live version on Anywhere But Home in 2004, and the studio version released again on Lost Whispers in 2016 as part of the band's collection of B-sides and outtakes on The Ultimate Collection LP set. "Breathe No More" is a B-side from the debut album, Fallen, written by Amy Lee. It was originally intended to appear on this album, but was scrapped and has since had several official releases. The first official release was a live version on Anywhere But Home in 2004, and the second was a piano studio version on the soundtrack for the movie Elektra in 2005. That studio version was included in the compilation album Lost Whispers in 2016. There is also a demo “rock” version from the 2001-2002 sessions with added sounds, including the Morse code sampled from the Sound Asleep version of ”Give Unto Me” and the Origin demo version of “My Immortal”. In late 2012, Amy explained the meaning of the song to a fan during a Meet & Greet: "I wrote the song when I was in quite a dark place. I was in a toxic relationship that was destroying me, the song is really about how sometimes when you're in a toxic relationship you change yourself for the other person, but you start to hate yourself for it. You look in the mirror and hate the person you've become. That self loathing is one of the worst feelings in the world, because you just want the other person in the relationship to be happy but at the same time you don't want to lose yourself, the real you." On October 1, 2020, Amy Lee shared a series of Instagram stories featuring an early demo of the song. A voice note audio of the making and writing of Fallen was released on a cassette tape with unreleased demos as part of Fallen 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set in March 2024. Fallen received generally positive reviews from music critics. Johnny Loftus of AllMusic wrote that the album “does include flashes of the single's PG-rated nu-metal ('Everybody's Fool,' 'Going Under'). But it's the symphonic goth rock of groups like Type O Negative that influences most of Fallen." Entertainment Weekly, graded the album B-minus: "The genre now too old to be called nü-metal isn't exactly overflowing with spine-tinglingly great vocalists - let alone female ones. Amy Lee, lead singer of gloomy Arkansas rockers Evanescence, is an exception." Kirk Miller of Rolling Stone said that "when vocalist Amy Lee croons about lying 'in my field of paper flowers' or 'pouring crimson regret,' she gives Fallen a creepy spiritual tinge that the new-metal boys lack." Billboard's Christa Titus called the album a "highly polished, hook-filled affair." Melissa Maerz of Spin gave it four out of five stars: "Nu metal gets a powdering of Andrew Lloyd Webber theatrics as Lee aces her piano A-levels, adds a string section, and tackles capital letter issues - God ('Tourniquet'), Love ('Going Under'), and Death ('Bring Me To Life') - with the grandeur they deserve." Adrien Begrand of PopMatters opined that the album "has a small handful of transcendent moments, but a complete lack of musical adventurousness has the band mucking around either in stultifying nu-metal riffage, pretentious high school journal caterwauling, or even worse, both." Begrand praised Lee's "soaring, enchanting, angelic" voice, writing that "Evanescence would be nothing" without her. Christopher Gray of the Austin Chronicle found the album to be "a little too by the numbers to fully capitalize on Lee's obvious talents."According to Village Voice critic Robert Christgau, "Their faith, as embodied in Amy Lee's clarion sopralto [sic], lends their goth-metal a palpable sweetness". He jokingly concluded, "Now if only it wasn't goth-metal at all." In 2017, Rolling Stone ranked Fallen number 99 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time", calling it an "unlikely classic" with "a horror-movie-level ambience that was as chilling as it was campy". I never really related to the song but I grew up with her songs and this one was my favorite. I stick to this song like glue because it gives me memory of a friend who died back in high school and we both tried to figure out what it was and I finally figured it out and I had shared it with him. Later he died from heart problems. 🥺 so this song is more of a memory to me to keep my thoughts of him going.

Such an amazing and underrated song

As someone who grew up in a family of BPD/narcs, this song really hits home (literally). Especially the “you can’t abandon me” line.
